Beauty Products That Never Let Me Down
Most women remember when they first got to wear makeup - I know I did. It was eighth grade and I immediately started spending extra time in the makeup aisle at CVS, picking out eyeshadow colors I would ultimately wear once. I flipped through magazines and dog eared pages of tutorials so I could do my eyeliner like Taylor Swift or get the perfect berry lip like Emma Watson. It was the same with hair - I was always trying a new style for my hair that involved at least an hour with a hot tool.
Trends and products come and go, and especially as a teenager, I was buying new makeup faster than I could use the stuff I already had. However, some products have stood the test of time, for good reason. Here are some of the beauty products that have never let me down:

I don’t remember when I first started using this moisturizer, but it was sometime during middle school and it’s still the best. When you need a good lotion that isn’t oily but something more substantial than a water-based moisturizer, Trader Joe’s has the perfect one. Plus, it has SPF! As a very pale Irish person, I always need SPF. (I linked the two-pack on Amazon so you can see what it looks like or order it if there’s no Trader Joe’s near you!)
I have literally been using this since day one. For my 13th birthday, my grandmother took me to Benefit to my makeup done for the first time and she bought me my first makeup products, besides my LipSmackers collection. This highlighter was one of the products I got, and I’ve been buying it for ten years. It’s the perfect subtle shimmer, works everywhere from the browbone to the cheekbone and the formula is just the right consistency. It’s *chef’s kiss* literally perfect.
Another favorite since high school - it’s the perfect berry shade for my skin tone and makes me green eyes pop. The formula is creamy and although it doesn’t stay on all day, it’s easy to re-apply and looks good with every outfit. I’ve worn it to job interviews, prom, dates, birthday parties, sorority formals, family events, you name it and I’ve probably worn Cosmo. I also got my sister hooked on it. I truly believe this shade flatters everyone on the planet.
This product is also one I’ve used for over 10 years. One of my mom’s best friends used to be a hairstylist and she cut our hair in her kitchen for years. She started using this product on me in middle school when I cut my hair way too short and it got very frizzy and tangled, making my hair resemble a cloud of cotton balls. It was not good. This product detangles, smooth frizz, protects from heat and a lot of other great things. It’s probably my one desert island product - I don’t need makeup or face masks, but I need this spray. I literally don’t go anywhere without it - including Girl Scout Camp as a tween.
This lip balm has been part of my daily routine for five or so years. It’s super popular, for a very good reason, so I’m sure everyone already has one of these lip balms in one of the many pretty shades it comes in. Rose is my personal favorite, because it’s a great tint of color. It also leaves my lips feeling soft and moisturized. I tend to chew on my lips a lot so there’s always dry and in need of extra help. I have a few fantastic products from Fresh, but this is my far my favorite.
Over the past few years, baths have become a stress relief staple for me. Unless it’s the middle of summer (like now) and just too hot to sit in the bathtub, I usually take a bath a week. Sometimes I just use epsom salts, but usually there’s a Lush bath bomb in there with me. And a glass of wine and a TV show playing on my ipad on the edge of the tub. But I digress. Lush has many amazing bath bombs, but Cheer Up Buttercup is my all-time favorite. It smells amazing and it does exactly what the web description claims: Turns your frown upside down. No matter how stressful or awful my week has been, an hour in a hot bath with this bomb and I feel like a new woman. And it’s the perfect size - a bit smaller than the average ones, which I always cut in half.
When liquid lipstick got really popular, I tried the NYX Soft Matte Lip Creams like everyone else and liked them fine, but Lip Lingerie is much better in my opinion. It’s less drying and I feel like it lasts a bit longer. I’ve been wearing it for a couple years and it’s always my go-to if I don’t want to have to deal with re-applying throughout the day. I have two shades: Bedtime Flirt (a nudish-pink) and Exotic (a warm reddish brown). Honestly, if I had to use only one liquid lipstick for the rest of my life, it would be this one. And it’s so affordable!
This is one of the newest products to my rotation, but I already know it’s the best concealer I’ve ever worn. It took me 10 years, but I finally found the right concealer. I have super dark under eye circles, and I’ve tried more products than I can count to cover them up so I don’t look like a zombie every day. A friend suggested I try Shape Tape and it totally changed my life. For the first time in years, I can totally cover up my dark circles, which is the only thing on my face I’m really self-conscious about. I don’t wear full coverage foundation because I have pretty good skin, but without the right undereye concealer I just look like crap. For those who have similar coloring to me, my shade is Fair Beige.
